Study by Alfred Stevens (1817 – 1875) – “Truth tearing the tongue from Falsehood”. This is one of two group studies for the Wellington Monument, in St. Paul’s Cathedral, the second of the two studies being “Valour treading Cowardice underfoot”.
Both maquettes belong to the collection of Dorset Museum, Dorchester, and are currently on display in the Artists’ Dorset Gallery at the Museum.
Both the plaster maquettes had sustained damage to the bases, and to the groups of figures.
The weakened areas were stabilized, the cracks and areas of missing plaster were in-filled and remodelled, and the missing pigment was retouched, to match the existing colour.
The maquettes each measure approximately 66cms in height.
